I was the least concerned person about their health you will probably ever meet. All the advice to eat healthier, exercise more, relax more and work less meant gibberish to me. I can’t say I felt invincible, I was just too busy with running my own business to pay attention.
It’s not that work was more important to me than anything else. It was that I had worked so hard to build it, that I didn’t know how to step back and let others run it for me. Micro managing much?
Well, since I wasn’t paying attention to any of my body signs, it decided to take a little break to show me enough was enough. It started with a light cough every day, then a throbbing headache, and finally a complete lack of energy that made my whole immune system collapse. When I went to see the doctor that day I was convinced he’d tell me I had cancer, judging by all these sudden symptoms. “Burnout” was the diagnoses. I had no idea what burnout was until I experienced it very deeply under my skin. Let me assure you that it’s the least pleasant feeling in the world.
The burnout was so profound that I was risking severe depression if I didn’t do something about it soon. When a close friend told me how she’d been having daily cups of organic Chaga tea every morning to boost her immune system and keep her energized, I laughed in her face. Surely she was joking?
